Main Theme

=>This essay is self directed in addressing the women's expowerment and their identity. Taslima Nasreen complains that in Bangladesh, the women are still not addressed from the government, they are suppressed, exploited, discriminated and they are not considered equally as men. Although, there is women prime minister, the condition of womens has not been changed. It is meaningless to be proud of having women prime minister in her view. She gives many instances of wamen being exploited. The wives of great people are also exploited & being victimized. It is the deception to the women. They are restricted in home works and prohibited in many works. They are like the caged birds, their world is  the kitchen, and their job is to rear, bear and care the children. They are being murdered raped and disfigured by acid and so on. Many girls are living in brothels. There is a business of women, child marriage. polygamy, Kidnappings etc ,but no one is caught for these crimes because laws have loopholes. Women are sold in the price of vegetable. But, nobedy raises questions in the parliament. The writers have deep faith that women would be more eager to address these problems than men. However, women donot address these issues due to the pressure from male colleagues, religion, imperialism, foreign aid, etc keep them clinging to their seat for dear life. In this way, women are victimized from different angles.

Possible Questions from this chapter

a)Why does the writer charge the women leaders of Bangladesh for being elected for some respectable position?

Ans. The writer change the women leaders of Bangladesh for being elected for some respectable position because they do not do anything for women by following the suggestion of their husbands. Moreover, they are elected by the power of their husbands rather than by their own ability. They cannot stop women exploitation, rapes, early marriage and restriction.

b)What problems does Taslima refer to that harrows us every day? You can cite a few more from Nepal’s experience?

Ans. Taslima refers women’s problems which are same to Nepal. Women are restricted, being murdered, raped, disfigured by acid, bought and sold and so on. Women are exploited and used as a tool to bear children. They are only for the pleasure of male. But the concerned women leaders do not consider both in Bangladesh and Nepal.

c)What figurative illustration has Taslima presented by mentioning the Sari and Topi? Interpret her points clearly by comparing them. Do they apply with Nepali people as well ? Discuss.

Ans. In Bangladesh the women have to cover their heads with the end of their Saris when they enter in politics but the male do not wear caps ( Topis) although Islam asks both men and women to cover their heads. Only the women are forced to follow religious rules. Such trend is also found in Nepal in different religious work and activities of the society. This is a discrimination between male and female.

d)Write an essay on women’s status in Nepal.

The status of women in Nepal can not be said to good. More than 60% women are illiterate. The status of women is different according to regions, caste, economy, religion, and the structure of the community. In day of yore(Past time), they were given the subordinate treatment in spite of the respect given to mother and sisters. The ruling class regarded them as a mere thing to yield pleasure to men .They were deprived of education because the guardians did not think it necessary. They were considered as the machines to serve the man and bear children. There used to be sati systen in which the wives of the dead husbands had to burn alive on the  same funeral pyres where the dead-bodies were placed .Gradually  with every decade that passed away, the outlook towards women changed bringing about the improvement in their situation.

As a result, presently, they are equal to men in a every walk of life. In the field of education, they have proved that they can be second to none. They have been successful as men in every profession. One can cite thousands of examples of women being the lead as doctors, engineers, lecturers etc.  The new constitution of Nepal has granted equal status to them. If they are given unjust (biased) treatment on account of their sex, they can invoke the law of the country for justice. The government when they were treated as slaves. is supposed to preserve their fundamental rights. Like men, they can have property in their names. Gone are the days when they were treated as a slaves.

Unfortunately, they are still victimized in the conservative circles .In respect of their right for legal inheritance, they are found lagging behind. The representative - body of parliament has not yet suggested any solution to this predicament(problem/issues).
Indubitably(undoubtly), the day will come in Nepal when parents count their daughters on the same footing as their son.
